County libraries contain books, magazines, newspapers, periodicals, videos, audios and other information as a great source of learning. These libraries house texts for children and adults for all walks of life and are run by the tax dollars of every one including the six million Muslims of North America. An examination of local libraries shows an alarming deficiency in holdings on Islam, Muslims and Islamic civilization, history and culture. Either there are hardly any books on Islam or they are written by authors who apparently knew little about Islam. A case in point is books on "Mohammadanism." Most of these books need to be discarded right away. These libraries should have books written by Muslims.

We make the following recommendations to the county and other public librarians:

  1. Do a litmus test to see how you fare on Islamic books.
  2. Re-evaluate your holdings on various religions, including Islam. Compare the relative sizes of stocks on each religion. Based on these findings, re-allocate current year funds and plan for the acquisitions on those religions where deficiencies are found. Ensure that Islam is properly represented. Keep in mind that there are six million Muslims in North America and over one billion world wide. A suggested two-point  formula for the allocation of funds is:
    1. Base level allocation: Determine the minimal amount to spend on every major religion, regardless of other factors such as percent population and local make up of the population.
    2. Population Factor: Determine factors such as percent population in the USA, world-wide and the local community.
  3. Consult a local Muslim organization to identify holdings which may be out-dated, obsolete or garbage. They can also be used to identify a list of resources, books, audios and videos to acquire.
  4. Check out the Book Services listed on the left.
